When things are moving quickly, it’s easy to assume the answer is to slow things down. And sometimes it is. But not always. There are moments when clarity comes from acting early, before a situation gathers momentum.

This is where the tension sits.

Discernment in leadership and in life is less about choosing slow or fast, and more about sensing what the moment is asking of you.

I was reminded of this recently in my own work. I found myself pausing, choosing to wait for more information, trusting that it would bring greater clarity. But as the situation unfolded, it became clear that moving early was the path to more space and direction. This time the clarity wasn’t found in waiting. It needed to be created through action.

This is something I’ve worked with for many years, and I write about it in The Stability Effect.

A useful enquiry when you find yourself in what I call the act now vs wait for more information tension is:

What is actually needed here?

You might choose to bring this question into your own leadership, your business, or your life.
